Students Who Shone in
the GIST Community Gather
for the First GIST Honors Dinner

The GIST Honors Dinner was established to formally recognize and honor students who have elevated the university’s reputation and contributed to the development of the community in various areas, including research and academic achievement, entrepreneurship, student government, volunteering, and international exchange. By highlighting both outstanding achievements and meaningful contributions, the event aims to instill pride in students and foster a community culture that celebrates accomplishment.

A total of 40 students who had achieved meaningful results in their respective fields were invited based on recommendations from university offices and academic departments. Key officials, including President Lim Ki-chul, Provost Jung Sung-ho, Vice President for Research Kim Yong-chul, Vice President for External Affairs Jung Yong-hwa, Dean of the College of Engineering Park Ji-woong, and Dean of Admissions and Student Affairs Lee Soo-jung, were also in attendance to encourage the students. The event began with a welcome address from Dean of Admissions and Student Affairs Lee Soo-jung, followed by dinner, a toast from the President, and a group photo. Although it was a formal dinner, the focus of the event was meaningful dialogue between the students and the university leadership. Conversations about research, career paths, campus life, and the future of GIST gave participants an opportunity to share and reflect on the university’s values and future direction. The students invited to this event have advanced the GIST community forward in their own ways across various fields, including academic research, digital innovation, student government, and social contribution. In the fields of academics and research, students who have achieved success in international journals and major academic conferences were recognized.

Song Mu-geon, a doctoral student in the Department of Chemistry, published research on a molecular editing technique for redesigning pharmaceutical structures in the international journal Nature Synthesis. Hong Chang-ui, an integrated master’s–doctoral student in the Department of Mechanical & Robotics Engineering, published research on transdermal optical wireless technology for implantable devices in npj Flexible Electronics. Kim Hee-soo, a master’s student in the Department of Environment & Energy Engineering, demonstrated GIST’s excellence by publishing a study identifying nonphysical phenomena in AI-based weather forecasting models in npj Climate and Atmospheric Science. Students also demonstrated leadership in the fields of digital innovation and student government. Ryu Hyun-seung and Park Jin-woo from the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science developed Ziggle, an application that consolidates campus announcements in one place, and PotG, a ride-sharing coordination service to improve student mobility. Their work is particularly notable because they identified problems experienced by students and developed technological solutions themselves. Kim Jae-hong, a doctoral student at the Graduate School of AI Policy & Strategy, served as president of the Graduate Student Association and participated in the Steering Committee for the Establishment of the University Council, helping to build channels through which graduate students’ views could be reflected in university governance. Community service and social responsibility were another major focus of the event. Yeom Gyeong-hun, a doctoral student in the Department of Physics & Photon Science, was recognized for his prompt response during the electron accelerator laboratory accident at the Center for Attosecond Quantum Research in June 2023, which contributed to the rescue of those involved. He previously received a Presidential Special Commendation for his actions. Alima Kissamgaliyeva, a student in the Department of Mechanical & Robotics Engineering, personally planned and conducted a GIST information session for approximately 70 students at her former school in Kazakhstan. By sharing her experiences as an international student at GIST and introducing campus life, she played a vital role in connecting prospective international students with GIST.

GIST plans to develop the Honors Dinner into an ongoing exchange program through which faculty members and students can share the university’s vision and values. President Lim Ki-chul stated, “Students who have dedicated themselves to the community and enhanced the university’s stature are GIST’s greatest pride,” adding, “I hope this event will become a meaningful tradition that inspires pride among our students.” The GIST Honors Dinner was more than just a ceremony to celebrate outstanding students; it was an occasion that demonstrated the achievements GIST seeks to encourage and the contributions it values as a community. It is also significant in that it highlighted not only academic papers and awards, but also student-led problem-solving, volunteering, mentoring, and international exchange.
