GIST's Major News from the First Half of 2026

12% of Full-time Faculty Named Among the World's Top 2% of Researchers: Demonstrating World-Class Research Competitiveness in Quantum Science, Drug Development, and Other Fields
23 GIST researchers were named to the 2025 World's Top 2% Scientists list jointly compiled by Elsevier and Stanford University. This figure represents approximately 12% of the 194 full-time faculty members, demonstrating GIST's global research competitiveness. Among them, nine ranked among the world's top 1% of researchers, and Professors Rim Chun-taek, Ham Byoung-seung, Ahn Hyo-sung, and Kim Yong-chul were included in the top 1% for the fifth consecutive year. They have demonstrated international influence in the fields of wireless power, quantum information and sensing, control engineering, and AI-based new drug development. These results provide clear evidence that GIST's research capabilities are internationally competitive.

Professor Kim You-soo Receives the 21st Kyung-Ahm Prize in Natural Sciences, Leading Global Basic Science through Single-Molecule Quantum Control Research
Professor Kim You-soo of the GIST Department of Chemistry, who also serves as Director of the IBS Center for Quantum Conversion Research, has received the 21st Kyung-Ahm Prize in Natural Sciences. Professor Kim established a new foundation for single-molecule research by pioneering a form of spectroscopy that combines scanning tunneling microscopy with optical technologies, enabling the real-time measurement and control of electronic and vibrational states and quantum phenomena within individual molecules. He has demonstrated world-class research capabilities by publishing numerous papers in Science and Nature and has expanded the possibilities for next-generation quantum devices and precision measurement technologies by achieving exciton formation and control within a single molecule on the picosecond timescale. These achievements have expanded our understanding of quantum energy conversion and molecular dynamics while elevating the global standing of Korean basic science.

GIST Marks Its 32nd Anniversary and Takes a New Step Forward with a New Main Gate: A Symbol of Openness, Communication, and Innovation
GIST held a ceremony commemorating its 32nd anniversary together with a dedication ceremony for its new main gate. This event was organized to look back on 32 years of achievements in education, research, and industry -academia cooperation and to mark a new starting point for GIST's future development. The new main gate was created as a symbolic space embodying the philosophy of openness, communication, and innovation, visually expressing GIST's identity and future vision. During the ceremony, a memorial plaque was awarded to the late Professor Kim Kyung-woong to honor his contributions to the remediation of contaminated soil and groundwater and efforts to address water challenges in developing countries. GIST plans to continue expanding an innovation ecosystem that connects local communities and society with researchers and students.

Posthumous Book by the Late Professor Kim Kyung-woong Published -- Environment and a Future of Possibilities: The Final Reflections of an Environmental Engineer
GIST published the posthumous book titled Environment, and the Future of Possibility: The Final Reflections of an Environmental Engineer, which brings together conversations between the late Professor Kim Kyung-woong, who passed away in the fall of 2025, and UNIST Professor Cho Jae-weon, on December 22 last year. The publication project began with the collective efforts of Professor Kim's colleagues to honor his memory and was completed through the university press. The book reframes the environment not merely as something to be protected or as an instrument of public policy, but as a central principle of thought spanning technology, society, and ethics. It also recounts Professor Kim's commitment to practical action, including his work in soil and groundwater remediation and the distribution of GIST Hope Water Purifiers.

Graduate School of Management of Technology Opens: Training Glocal Technology Management Professionals for the AI Transformation Era
GIST officially launched its Graduate School of Management of Technology (MOT) with an opening ceremony held at the Industry -Academic Cooperation Research Building on January 16. This followed a year of preparation after GIST was selected for a specialized workforce development program operated by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy. The graduate school focuses on interdisciplinary education geared toward management outcomes and problem-based learning (PBL). Through industry -academia -research collaboration, global PBL programs, domestic and international internships, and special MOT lectures, it provides action-oriented education that covers everything from technology planning to R&D and commercialization. The school admitted its first cohort of 15 master's students, including both working professionals and full-time students, for the spring 2026 semester and provides full scholarships to full-time students.

GIST and Arm Launch Global Collaboration in AI Semiconductor Education: Training 1,400 Semiconductor Design Professionals over Five Years
GIST has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Arm, a global semiconductor intellectual property company, to foster AI semiconductor design professionals. The two organizations will launch the GIST -Arm School as an international collaborative education model, jointly developing Arm IP-based design curricula and providing educational content. This program is designed to be linked with undergraduate, master's, and doctoral curricula to equip students with practical skills applicable in industry. GIST plans to develop this initiative into a foundation for building a semiconductor talent pipeline in southern Korea and expanding AI semiconductor research, development, and demonstration.

Professor Lee Byung-ha Receives the 37th Academic Award from the Optical Society of Korea: Recognized for Achievements in 3D Optical Imaging Research and Academic Contributions
Professor Lee Byung-ha of the GIST Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science has received the 37th Academic Award from the Optical Society of Korea. Since joining GIST in 1999, Professor Lee has conducted research in core areas of optics, including fiber Bragg grating devices, optical sensor systems, optical coherence tomography, and photoacoustic three-dimensional imaging. He has demonstrated significant academic impact by publishing over 150 papers in international journals, accumulating more than 5,200 citations, and securing approximately 30 domestic and international patents. In addition to training 24 doctoral and 28 master's graduates, he is also dedicated to expanding the industrial application of his research findings.

Harvard-Trained Philosophers Ahn Kang-hun and Kang Jin-ho Join GIST
GIST has appointed Kang Jin-ho as a visiting distinguished professor and Ahn Kang-hun as a professor in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, beginning in the spring 2026 semester. Both earned their doctorates from Harvard University. Professor Ahn has conducted research in Eastern philosophy, comparative philosophy, and the philosophy of art, while Professor Kang, formerly a professor at Seoul National University, is a recognized authority in the field of philosophy of language. With these appointments, the school now has three full-time philosophy faculty members, including School Dean Kim Geon-woo, whose research focuses on legal philosophy and AI ethics. GIST plans to strengthen education in ethical judgment and integrative thinking, which are increasingly essential to technological innovation in the AI era, while expanding humanities education so that science and engineering students can develop broader intellectual perspectives.
