At the time, a researcher was concerned that the sudden death of a germ-free mouse during an experiment might have been
caused by the test substance or contamination in the facility.
Months of research were potentially at risk of being halted.
Drawing on his extensive experience in toxicity research and pathological analysis, Lim immediately conducted a
necropsy.
The examination revealed that the cause was cecal volvulus—a twisting of the cecum, which had become enlarged due to the
physiological characteristics of germ-free animals that lack gut microbiota.
It was an incident caused by the anatomical vulnerability of germ-free animals, not an experimental variable or facility
contamination.
This case illustrates how a single accurate diagnosis by a veterinarian can redirect a study and protect data
accumulated over many months.
